MaPs

MaPs is an acronym for ‘Maturity and Progression series’. MaPs is a planned series of guides to help organisations identify and implement best practice in relation to learning technologies and to leverage the associated benefits for their organisation. This project is still in progress, the first phase was a State of the Art report which revealed that the assessment of companies’ maturity levels in learning technologies is already covered by two main organisations. The report revealed a gap in guiding organisations forward from their current maturity level to more effective use of learning technologies and guidance in the main areas of technical affordance. Currently, the academic research of the first guide on adaptive and personalisation affordances is concluding, the second phase of industry engagements is due to start early 2015.

What Problem does it Solve
Adoption and embedding of learning technology in organisations represents a significant investment. However there exists currently no clearly understood framework for evolution in the adoption of learning technologies. This means it is very difficult for organisations using learning technology to see the benefits of evolving to ever more sophisticated and effective methods and approaches of learning practice. Through the aggregation of academic thought leadership, industry best practice and Learnovate experience the MaPs project will provide a series of guides to give direction to companies.

Potential Application
• The Centre will develop a framework for auditing a company’s learning technology capability. Provide guidance in targeted areas such as adaptivity, collaboration etc. Design and develop informed recommendations and paths for change.
• These activity streams will provide private funding sources to the Centre. The development of a knowledge framework will also provide the Centre’s industry members with an opportunity to showcase their solutions to prospective clients.

This project leverages Learnovate’s experience in applying learning technologies, outputs and trials in corporate and K12 settings.

Evade

What is it?
A web-based platform to support the flexible and agile configuration of dynamic learning analytics. The platform is designed to provide the stakeholders that rely on learning management systems with rich learning analytics and flexible visualisation tools for improved performance management

What Problem does it solve?
Learning and development managers need to understand how well their training is working. If there are issues, they need to identify are they with the learners or the materials. The analytics from Evade provide such insights and allow fast action to be taken.

Potential Application
The platform’s technologies are easily reconfigurable and can be licensed individually or as a suite of next practice learning technologies that can be integrated with other learning and talent management platforms as a complete solution.

iLearn

What is it?
iLearn is an immersive learning environment designed to identify, develop and assess problem solving, collaboration and other 21st century competencies through task-based game play. iLearn is underpinned by an innovative pedagogical framework to elicit and analyse problem solving and collaborative behaviours within the immersive learning environment. Evidence of problem solving and collaboration activity is captured and aggregated from a number of sources within the iLearn environment. This data triangulation enables more accurate assessment of these complex competencies. iLearn enables a teacher or a trainer to be present in the immersive learning environment to monitor the on-task performance of learners using real-time data and to provide real-time, targeted scaffolding when it is requested or required by learners.

What Problem does it solve?
Problem solving and collaboration have been identified as key 21st century workforce competencies but there is widespread uncertainty amongst educators and organisations as to how to effectively and efficiently leverage technology to identify, develop and assess these and other complex competencies.

Application in Commercial Learning
Organisations require multi-functional workforce management tools to align the strategies and improve the efficiencies of Learning and Development, Human Resources and Talent Management functions.

Application in K12 Learning
In the education sector there is a Government-driven focus on the development and assessment of 21st Century skills. However there is widespread uncertainty as to how to best assess these complex skills. Educators are looking to technology to provide them with objective, reliable and robust assessment tools.

Technologies
To implement the pedagogical framework, iLearn comprises a number of component technologies – the immersive learning environment itself (ILE), social search and recommender technology (SSR) and data capture technology.
ILE: The immersive learning environment is designed to enable learners to perform the task and to capture specified indicators of problem solving and collaboration activity within the context of the task. The engagement affordances of the immersive learning environment together with the game mechanics interwoven into the task are exploited to engage and motivate learners to complete the task.
SSR (Social Search and Recommender Technology) acts as a conduit for problem solving and collaboration activity in iLearn.
Data Capture Technology is integrated into iLearn to capture indicators of problem solving and collaboration competencies as learners progress through the task.

iLearn Trial
iLearn underwent a formal trial with 109 Transition Year students earlier this year. The results, contained in the iLearn Evaluation Report to which Learnovate members have access, are very promising. The next step is to trial iLearn in a corporate setting.

Mining for Expertise in Corporate Document Repositories

An innovative technology that mines expertise from within organisations to support informal learning and leverage tacit knowledge. The application enables learners to search for or browse topics in the organisation’s document repositories and to link to domain experts within the organisation.

The Opportunity
The application can be licensed as a standalone technology or for integration with other learning and talent management platforms.

Topic Extraction: Automatically extracts a list of topics discussed within the documents
Expertise Finding: Identifies domain experts for the extracted topics to leverage tacit organisational knowledge
User Interface: An intuitive user interface enables learners to search for topics of interest, or explore a domain to learn more about the expert, topic or document

Social Network Analysis

A novel web-based application that provides meaningful learning analytics into how knowledge is acquired and shared within informal and collaborative learning environments. The application identifies and visualises how knowledge is disseminated, highlighting key influencers and enablers.

Innovative Technologies
• Data Capture: Leverages an organisation’s existing communication channels, e.g. instant messaging, to construct a social network between the members
• Social Network Analysis: Analyses how the network members interact to identify key influencers and their impact on the knowledge network
• Visualisation Framework: Provides an intuitive visualisation of the organisation’s knowledge network
